Technical Note: Recipe for monitoring of total ozone with a precision of around 1 DU applying mid-infrared solar absorption spectra

چکیده
Mid-infrared solar absorption spectra recorded by a state-of-the-art ground-based FTIR system have the potential to provide precise total O3 amounts. The currently bestperforming retrieval approaches use a combination of small and broad spectral O3 windows between 780 and 1015 cm−1. We show that for these approaches the uncertainties of the temperature profile are by far the major error sources. We demonstrate that a joint optimal estimation of temperature and O3 profiles widely eliminates this error. The improvements are documented by an extensive theoretical error estimation. Our results suggest that mid-infrared FTIR measurements can provide total O3 amounts with a precision of around 1 DU, placing this method among the most precise ground-based O3 monitoring techniques. We recapitulate the requirements on the instrumental hardware and on the retrieval that are needed to achieve this high precision.

متن کاملTrends of ozone total columns and vertical distribution from FTIR observations at eight NDACC stations around the globe
Ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements of solar absorption spectra can provide ozone total columns with a precision of 2 % but also independent partial column amounts in about four vertical layers, one in the troposphere and three in the stratosphere up to about 45 km, with a precision of 5–6 %. We use eight of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change...
متن کاملQuality assessment of ozone total column amounts as monitored by ground-based solar absorption spectrometry in the near infrared (> 3000 cm−1)
This study examines the possibility of groundbased remote-sensing ozone total column amounts (OTC) from spectral signatures at 3040 and 4030 cm−1. These spectral regions are routinely measured by the NDACC (Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change) ground-based FTIR (Fourier transform infraRed) experiments. In addition, they are potentially detectable by the TCCON (Total Carb...
متن کاملOzone monitoring with an infrared heterodyne radiometer.
Measurements of the total burden and of the concentration versus altitude profiles of ozone have been made with a ground-based heterodyne radiometer at Pasadena, California. The measurements were made in the 9.5-micrometer wavelength region, where a strong ozone infrared absorption band exists. The radiometer measured solar absorption at selected wavelengths, with a spectral resolution of 0.001...
متن کاملGlobal distribution of total ozone and lower stratospheric temperature variations
This study gives an overview of interannual variations of total ozone and 50 hPa temperature. It is based on newer and longer records from the 1979 to 2001 Total Ozone Monitoring Spectrometer (TOMS) and Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV) instruments, and on US National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalyses. Multiple linear least squares regression is used to attribute variatio...
